A Collaborative Approach For Supporting Young Adults in Foster Care

A Training Institute of Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast in Collaboration with Children’s Home Society & Vita Nova Independent Living Services

Two sessions available:
January 11-15, 2010, Vero Beach, Florida
    and
January 25-29, 2010, West Palm Beach, Florida

Overview:
This course provides an intensive didactic and experiential study of dynamics and empirically based services with young adults (ages 18-23) aging out of foster care. Content includes a multi-disciplinary approach involving a broad array of social, mental health, and other pertinent community services. It will address a full continuum of care highlighting a clearly defined process of collaboration and intervention.

The course will provide a trauma sensitive foundation based upon research relating to optimum development; attributes of resilience and protective factors; motivation for change; affect regulation; and successful outcomes in child welfare. It will require completion of assigned readings based upon current evidence for effective services.

By the end of this training participants will gain:

- Understanding of social and cultural influences impacting young adults in foster care.
- Insight into the origins of trauma that may impact physical, social, psychological and sexual health.
- Improved communication skills.
- Increased comfort initiating sensitive discussions with youth.
- Practice with a multidisciplinary approach that involves all service providers.
- Understanding of developmental and intellectual needs of each client.
- Practical skills to motivate clients for maintaining healthy lifestyles.
- Practice teaching youth coping strategies for harm reduction.
- Medically accurate sexual health knowledge.
- Experience helping youth create and maintain a social support network.

The course is approved for 30 hours of continuing education credits.

Who should attend?

The course is intended to enhance community coordination and implementation of empirically based practices through multi-disciplinary collaboration. It is recommended for personnel from youth serving agencies involved with young adults aging out of foster care.

Registration and Fees:

Tuition for the course is $500.00 and includes textbooks.
